Herbal supplements may relieve menopause symptoms

March 08, 2006 in Women's Health, Menopause, Vitamins, Minerals, Antioxidants and Supplements, Nutrition Topics in the News

German researchers have found a combination of black cohosh and St. Johnís wort significantly reduces the symptoms of menopause.

The nine-month study, involving 300 women, gave herbal pills, containing a mixture of black cohosh and St. Johnís wort to some participants, while others received a placebo.

The most common symptom of menopause, hot flashes, decreased by 53 percent in the women who received the herbal supplement, while their psychological symptoms decreased by 56 percent.

These findings shed light on alternative means to ease menopausal symptoms without using controversial hormone replacement therapy.
