Researchers from the University of Georgia report that a caffeine supplement prior to exercise may significantly reduce muscle pain post exercise.
The small study randomly assigned nine women to receive either a caffeine supplement or placebo prior to exercise that caused moderate muscle soreness in the thigh muscles (quadriceps).
Women who received the caffeine supplement (equal to two cups of brewed coffee) one hour before exercise had a 48 percent reduction in pain compared to the placebo group.
Researchers warn that these findings which were published in the Journal of Pain may not be applicable to the general population and further studies are needed.
